We have a fairly extensive failure emulator in prod we can use to confirm this. We also rely on it for profiling and upstream seems to rely on it by default and hasn't changed in all those years. In any event, it's not worth removing if it's harmless. But it's perhaps worth confirming if it's causing harm.
