[08:32:44] hi, does someone knows an extension hides IP addresses of anonymous users on web ui? I think I saw it somewhere but I don't remember the name. [08:35:25] It was Extension:AnonPrivacy, thank you. [16:27:24] Been looking into getting a Wikibase install set up, and was just wondering if it's viable to use the LTS version of MediaWiki for it. It does mention that backwards compatibility is not a priority at all, but I would imagine that an LTS version should be fairly safe until EOL, right? [16:32:54] you'd need to use a version of Wikibase that matches your MW version. I think the older Wikibase versions don't receive backports for bugfixes so it's stable in the sense that anything currently working on it will continue to work, but anything that is broken will also continue to be broken until you upgrade [16:33:45] Sounds like it's a much better idea to go with the current version, huh? [16:34:49] hi - visitor here, I build, use and maintain old software here myself, but I do not face it out on the open net very much [16:35:41] our setup (linux base) emphasizes LTS versions, and we get real updates too.. but its both art and science, and there are always troubles [16:36:36] jfolv: do you have the resources to upgrade your wiki stack every 6 months or so? If yes, I'd go for current versions. If no, I'd go for LTS [16:37:39] Heh. That's a good point. I'm the only sysadmin and I'm managing multiple sites. Probably best to go for LTS in that case. [16:38:28] is it realistic to update php and not the software base? I have no idea [16:38:58] the wiki evolves significantly faster than PHP does, you'd only really have a need to upgrade PHP once it becomes EOL [16:39:02] qt4 to qt5 was a big jump for us [16:39:33] (and depending on your OS vendor, even EOL versions of PHP may still be receiving security backports by the vendor themselves even though upstream is no longer supporting it) [16:40:03] I just let the OS package manager manage that stuff and stick with it until it's time for OS upgrades [16:42:21] Ha, sounds like me. Unless I need to specifically curate my PHP version due to bugs or incompatibilities, the OS usually does fine :P [17:07:03] jfolv: fwiw Debian stable includes MediaWiki LTS version [17:07:24] As a downloadable package? [17:07:32] as an official package, yes [17:07:42] No way! That's awesome! Didn't know that. [17:08:09] you may need to manually run update.php after upgrades, though. [17:08:14] At least it used to be that way [17:20:54] debian++
