[01:51:06] Agent, lol re: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/615786602454581249/904060445491625984/unknown.png [01:51:55] "memory hole" a.k.a. "oversight" and "consensus" to "groupthink" especially ;) [01:52:20] "telescreen" is pretty funny, too [02:05:26] dmehus: Hate Week = Requests for adminship is pretty funny too lol [04:06:43] Has anyone installed a complete ubuntu or other linux distro on usb? I'm thinking of going this route instead of doing a persistent linux live install, thinking maybe it might be nicer to update/maintain this way... but have never tried going this route before. [04:07:03] Chances are I'll end up breaking it at some point, messing around lol. [04:10:13] I've done it before albeit on slow USBs so the result was less than desirable 😁 [04:10:57] Yeah, live is fast, persistent is slow... was thinking about getting a pen drive ssd [04:11:19] Sandisk has a nice little "extreme" ssd [04:13:33] I've heard that full install is slow like persistent without a fast device. [04:14:58] I'm probably overthinking it, I should just get an SSD and give it a shot. If I don't like how it runs, it was an excuse to buy a nice little SSD lol [04:18:54] Linux generally runs faster than Windows almost always, even on HDDs so you'll be fine [04:18:56] lol [04:21:32] Heheheh, yeah, I used to run Fedora way back, then debian, followed by mint. Then a friend's windows shit the bed so it gave me an excuse to do some installing and new (linux) rescue stuff, since my old things are pretty darned ancient and I'm a little rusty. Not even sure where those thumb drives are. [04:23:01] Live ubuntu runs quick, swap to persistent, slow on my older thumb drives I've had laying around. Will have to get some new ones. [04:29:20] This is exactly where I'm at currently hehehh [04:30:03] Ah, Fedora. I've used it before and was considering jumping to it from Ubuntu because bleeding edge™️ but what I don't like about it now is that dnf upgrade is not resumable when interrupted. [04:30:03] During my first boot, the system hung during a dnf upgrade so when I restarted, I found out I had to reinstall my system as most of the packages were stuck mid-upgrade. [04:30:30] I thought all package managers could resume when interrupted but I guess I was wrong. [04:31:24] oof lol. Yeah, I better wait until I get a better drive [04:33:35] Converting old surface pro over to linux sounds more fruitful for the evening. [04:37:22] I wish I could use Linux as my daily driver on my Surfaces, I have like 4 of them collecting dust but as they're all newer models (SP2017 and above), camera support doesn't exist yet [04:37:44] So I can't use it for any Zoom meeting, arguably one of the most important things I use my Surfaces for [04:38:07] Love the battery life on them with Linux though, a single charge can last me 1-2 days [04:53:16] Oh bummer. [04:54:21] Yeah, I used to always dual boot on older laptops, so now wanting to turn an old one... SP4 I think, into an emulator since my R-Pi can't run stardew valley lol. [04:54:55] And I want all my retro games, plus stardew on one machine! lol [04:55:34] I could do it with a ridiculous roundabout way to install android on it, and run the android version, but I figure why not make use of the SP4. [04:56:50] Then I can have steam running and make it less switching and piddling around. [04:59:46] I kind of want to multiboot to play around with old distros, including Fedora to see how far it has come since I last used it. Plus, the ubuntu interface is looking quite nice now for mobile devices [06:38:44] @Spookreeeno and @Joseph Zppix thanks for the ping, I'm looking into Anything Goes Wiki [09:22:37] A lightweight distro would probably do fine, something heavier I'd suggest something more dedicated, ie, heavy storage portable ssd [09:22:58] I will say the latter worked very well for me in bringing linux to windows devoted heretic systems like all in one pcs :p [09:51:09] To his credit the 'Anything Goes' guy has a surprisingly constructive setup given the request. [09:51:24] I've answered your question on my talk page. I honestly regretted approving that wiki request, and I felt pretty stupid for approving it. [09:52:40] Perhaps a link to the conversation may help, since it's an answer that tells him to look somewhere else instead of a summary of a rather lengthy discourse. [09:52:57] Like this link here: https://discord.com/channels/407504499280707585/615786602454581249/903313340611313675 [09:52:57] [url] Discord | discord.com [09:53:32] And said conversation also points to the 'skimming' admission that was not well received. [09:54:16] And the fact that I was given a hard time for that, but it was only one person who did that, and even did so Friday. [09:55:17] I don't want to dig the hole, but I also noticed after that a british.miraheze.org was approved for someone's slightly vague description of a worldbuilding wiki; it seems to me a name of 'british' may imply a much broader and different scope than the description indicated, I can find the particular request if you like [09:55:58] The word British could be anything. [09:56:35] Precisely, but for Miraheze it is now home to a person's fiction series. https://meta.miraheze.org/wiki/Special:RequestWikiQueue/21206 [09:56:36] [url] Wiki requests queue - Miraheze Meta | meta.miraheze.org [09:57:22] The wiki name doesn't just British. It says "The British Wiki". [09:57:45] More proof that I need to work on quality control. [09:59:04] Indeed. For what it's worth I believe my WC request is, to put it mildly, likely to pass. Therefore there will be one more set of eyes to curate, and there shouldn't be as much perceived urgency to approve things quickly. [09:59:18] Well, I'm rooting for you. [10:00:28] Based on the comments of other users including a sysadmin and other wiki creators, the preference is to curate and prevent needing to bring in Stewards to correct edge cases, therefore each request deserves time to consider individually. [10:00:32] And thank you. [10:03:38] I might actually suggest a few things to help Wiki Creators collaborate a little more, such as a place to review requests as pairs or bring in third parties as needed (sysadmin/steward) and possibly even an area on Meta where someone declined may request a collaborative review from multiple WCs since we are only people and operate with our own discretion, and enabling/encouraging multiple eyes may produce better [10:03:39] judgement. [10:04:48] You know, that's not a bad idea. [10:05:15] I've always wondered if there was a good mechanism for WCs to tap shoulders and go 'hm does this make sense' on the fly, and that doesn't seem to be the case. [10:06:01] So going forward with stuff like that in place, WCs can feel more comfortable going on hold but still have good turnaround time + be able to decline a little more liberally, but the community gets an in-house chance to appeal an edge case. [11:29:27] In that case I think introducing peer review in wiki creating would be important [11:29:37] I'd strongly suggest hat [16:45:24] @Doug Pls accept my friend request :pupCoffeeMH: [17:26:00] what is the limit of asking a a website for miraheze [17:26:06] eh wait wrong channel [18:43:56] @Bukkit, sure, will do [18:44:21] * dmehus has a lot of DMs on Discord to catch up on, though his IRC DMs are essentially caught up [18:44:37] bet you have a lot of DMs [18:44:52] Agent, yep :( [23:01:14] darkmatterman450: Celebrate Halloween.
