[00:51:49] i think i might reinstall either opensuse or fedora on one of my laptops [00:52:00] i really hate arch linux [00:55:33] i honestly have quite the assortment of operating systems on my computers, my old thinkpad runs freebsd, my ideapad runs arch and my main laptop runs windows 11 [01:57:10] I too am looking to switch to Linux in the coming months; Microsoft is getting out of hand with all the AI crap they're pushing to their consumers [01:59:49] I might see if it's possible to just rip it out [01:59:59] I don't wanna use linux as a desktop ngl [02:00:09] i mean i could try using wine but [02:00:38] maybe ill try on a laptop [02:01:14] * MacFan4000 uses a Mac [02:02:30] * PixDeVl gives his condolences [02:06:56] I love my chromebook [02:09:48] im on a chormebook anyways [02:10:59] i dont even care about the ai, for some ungodly reason windows is taking all of my ram [02:11:14] they made a new venom movie? [02:11:50] once the cosmic desktop releases im switching to pop!_os [02:13:01] i love gnome but with extensions breaking every second, and the amount of resources it takes, i cannot stand it [04:41:07] average claire moment: https://files.catbox.moe/d8m4ty.png [05:03:42] the sleuth [05:07:47] i'm not lazy when it comes to security vulnerabilities [05:07:54] ...ignore that security review that i passed back to labster [08:37:28] I like and somewhat recommend opensuse but fedora seems like the cleaner support channel if I'm being honest. I resisted it for a long time but it's grown on me as the most cutting edge distro I can recommend. I do not want to spend a significant part of my time on maintenance a la arch [08:38:11] linux mint or debian take in picks on the milder, slower support end; mint never treated me wrong in particular [08:40:01] [1/2] ubuntu is as vanilla linux as can be and there are reasons I dislike it, but in a pinch it will do as something between the held back status of debian/mint lts and fedora. And everything I mentioned, key exception suse, is easy to just look up issues for and be in luck and/or is preconfigured well enough to minimize issues appearing in the first place. Suse is weaker on that although [08:40:01] [2/2] as long as it installs correctly I find it dependable. [08:41:32] [1/2] and for suse a lot of the time, but not always you can look at fedora support as a reasonably good stand in. And of course there are many things on linux that are the same difference anyway so if you're industrious it won't be a problem. It's basically poorly supported offbrands I discourage in particular. Closer to the tap makes things easier in several ways. If you have to use a fo [08:41:32] [2/2] rk, something that weens close to upstream is best. So, an arch fork I would recommend is endeavor but never manjaro. [08:41:37] if only Ubuntu didn't have snaps I'd actually recommend it to people [08:41:52] snap crap among smaller things are what put it on my personal no list [08:42:21] it's still among the most reliable that you can send a random person to use and you can still gut snap crap if you want, but part of linux is use what you want to see and I don't want to see that crap go any further [08:43:38] really for a lot of people, maybe not everyone who's thinking about it in this channel, the desktop environment is the largest difference + general compatibility if you suckled windows too much [08:44:08] unfortunately that last one is a very insidious hole as there is stuff with linux that is going to be objectively worse compared with learned windows experience [08:44:27] oh right, the desktop environment, another reason why I don't like Ubuntu [08:44:55] We're using Fedora Workstation with GNOME at class, it reminded me of how much I don't like GNOME [08:44:58] thousands and thousands of applications in support are all well and good but if you need a specific proprietary app that's notoriously poor on linux, you will settle for a worse experience making that app compatible or be downgraded [08:45:09] I despise gnome and avoid at any opportunity [08:45:30] it's also a bit of a bully in the ecosystem [08:53:23] this is why I went with something that supports KDE Plasma [08:53:29] although it's giving me a headache now [08:54:44] it's really not perfect but it's the best I know of on a few counts and it's the only real ecosystem alternative to gnome/gtk [08:55:18] I guess cosmic is slowly becoming a thing but I am not the type to beta test on my production systems, so [09:02:02] no way, CA is a DE [10:29:01] new dos discovered: https://wikis.world/@LucasWerkmeister/113293870225143442 [12:57:40] Chat ngl I actually look fire in a suit [12:57:53] oh? [12:58:07] I barely ever use one [12:58:14] This is like the second time lol [12:58:17] heh same [12:59:23] > "becoming a gf" has been a goal since i was like 11 [12:59:25] interesting [13:44:24] Did you write that down somewhere [13:45:43] pixldev: nah, someone else told me that [13:53:34] Seriously? [13:54:03] Like hey remember when you said this like 12 years ago [13:54:06] uh, yeah? [13:54:19] I have no idea how old you are 12 is a random toss [13:54:27] 12 years ago* [13:54:37] i'm reading old chat logs :p [13:54:59] PFT [13:55:09] How old is this [13:55:14] I barely remember what happened 12 days ago never mind 12 years ago [13:55:27] early december apparently [13:55:30] 2023 [13:55:36] i thought it was late december wtf [13:56:41] > [13/10/2024 00:55] I barely remember what happened 12 days ago never mind 12 years ago [13:56:46] wow, 12? impressive [13:56:54] i can't even remember what happened two days ago [13:58:38] BlankEclair: same [13:58:39] I can’t remember my name [13:58:54] Alright pix [13:58:56] one time i forgot that git existed [13:59:03] Lmao [13:59:13] I actually sometimes wonder on a Friday doing my time card at work what I actually did on the Monday [13:59:40] And it's like who am I supposed to be billing [14:08:59] Been considering maybe moving email to something I can control more, should I try proton mail, simple login, or fuck it self host [14:09:25] i use simplelogin with disroot [14:09:33] Probably gonna want to get a custom domain eventually, move to site specific emails [14:09:45] Sadly pixl.dev is taken [14:09:49] awh :( [14:09:57] fun fact: github gets pissy about simplelogin emails [14:10:15] why [14:10:32] pix-l.dev isn’t. Should I go for it? [14:11:32] no [14:11:45] aliasedaasdasd [14:11:48] oh [14:11:56] bloody sway bug [14:12:00] BlankEclair: why is GitHub pissy? [14:12:09] Also does simple login let you have subdomains. Ie I want to keep emails I give to humans like contact@me.pixl.dev, or something else for other type of stuff [14:12:11] https://transfem.social/notes/9y0jmzxyrd7u06c1 [14:12:16] here's the response i got when contacting gh support [14:12:58] > [13/10/2024 01:12] Also does simple login let you have subdomains. Ie I want to keep emails I give to humans like contact@me.pixl.dev, or something else for other type of stuff [14:13:04] uhh i don't see why not but lemme check [14:13:54] Hmm [14:14:07] My GitHub email is github@rhinosf1.com [14:14:09] > This feature is only available on Premium plan. Upgrade [14:14:10] bleh [14:14:19] RhinosF1: probably because it's not a big aliased mail service [14:14:33] BlankEclair: it's cf relay [14:14:39] til that exists [14:14:47] I have other emails on it though [14:14:52] So that might be why [14:14:53] guessing it's because it's not smth like blankeclair.slmail.me [14:15:04] My GitHub account has like 6 emails on it [14:16:28] pixldev: they have https://simplelogin.io/docs/custom-domain/registrars/namecheap/namecheap-subdomain/ so i would assume so [14:25:27] wtf the homebrew channel has its own ost? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLDlWNDmR8k [15:22:17] Claire: What if I just self host the email. How bad an idea is that [15:23:04] I mean simple login is OSS so theoretically could you host a single user instance [15:53:24] @rhinosf1 I fucking love the simple login devs [15:53:31] [1/2] Not only: [15:53:31] [2/2] > This README contains instructions on how to self host SimpleLogin. [15:54:27] But the MOBILE APP supports setting a URL to your instance [16:02:45] That's cool [16:05:53] 💞 [16:05:53] https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/615786602454581249/1294692528196550728/image0.jpg?ex=670befe0&is=670a9e60&hm=f2935bb4300e0fcd5f0c435e9824628c56e507c0d2b267995c1b30e99e8ddb63& [16:07:17] Smart devs [16:34:26] I don't need AI in my desktop system if I can just open chatgpt.com in my browser [16:54:59] Hey copilot, how to bastardize Windows [17:33:10] @tali64 @raidarr what proton mail plan do you have [17:33:38] I'm using the free tier; I don't have a way to pay for premium [17:33:47] Gotcha gotcha [17:39:38] Anyone know of an Alias service for phone numebrs [17:41:16] Firefox has one, depending on where you live [17:41:44] For phone numbers? Wow [17:41:50] I’m in the US so I’ll see [17:42:05] Oh then almost surely you have access [17:42:10] I heard they have a email one [17:42:40] yeah, as part of the paid plans for Relay they have phone numbers as well [17:42:45] if I remember correctly [17:42:47] Ah [17:48:02] self hosting simple login is on my eventual todo [17:48:09] looks like fun tbh [17:48:54] Minus the DNS yea [17:49:07] mm yeah probably [17:49:37] DNS -> Damn, Networking Sucks [17:49:51] fr [18:15:14] [1/2] this is the effort I am going through just to get clean images for a wiki [18:15:14] [2/2] https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/615786602454581249/1294725079216947251/ba7a5050be498f90.png?ex=670c0e31&is=670abcb1&hm=95e443156d2b349322584de0809f664d18f91e27eab86684fa8517febfbe66ff& [19:46:00] wow [20:19:36] https://lea.pet/notes/9za4s5q58h [20:22:31] never loaded unless I use a VPN :3 [20:24:48] @rhinosf1 i am in leeds nn doing the otley run [20:27:50] Why [20:31:09] My friends birthday [20:31:48] I forgot to disable the VPN and got a Mountain Dew ad tho here where I live MTN isn't available in normal stores [20:39:48] unlimited is the main account [20:40:19] mysudo was on my list to pursue this [20:40:21] Is it how much again? [20:40:34] i think thats what i saw yea [20:40:40] $8/mo I believe [20:40:45] they also do email alias I think [20:41:02] huh, may look into moving after HR wake up and i get payed for work [20:41:21] plus is probably as far as most people need [20:41:40] Eh probably [20:42:18] i need to see how much simple login is compared to sudo [20:42:49] honestly since icloud DDG Firefox etc all have aliases may not need it [20:42:54] I mean [20:43:12] raise your hand if you make email aliases to give to other people [20:52:17] I've done it before but it's generally unnecessary [21:32:25] Yeah, unless it’s something like `emergency@pix-l.dev` [21:33:38] Or to route to RL email `christopher.business@pix-l.dev` to not buy another domain lol [21:35:24] oh and to clarify, no, my real name is in fact, not Christopher [21:39:03] I don’t know about self hosting my own email cause if i fuck it up and the server goes down I lose anything sent to me womp [21:48:28] pop3 with a reliable third party [21:48:39] but I ultimately opted against that in favor of proton [21:49:25] Pardon? [21:51:44] Email is resilient to short outages [21:51:56] Mail servers should retry if given temporary failures [21:57:46] how long [22:01:29] there is no reason to lose emails if you make backups of them and have local copies [22:02:07] Oh no i meant if something is sent while my server is down [22:02:09] this is where proton makes me iffy as I do not quite have the same control/ease as when I had a solution, however maintaining against a growing internet of centralized services that plopped all my mail into spam folders was becoming a pain in the ass [22:02:17] I guess it dies at that point yeah [22:02:47] hi i want to sent an email to contact@pixl.dev. Lmao never heard of that guy in my life cya [22:03:17] did you use to self host? [22:04:33] self in the sense of a third party server managing but more direct control, yes [22:05:30] what service [22:06:31] well the older one was inherited off godaddy [22:06:48] I bounced a bit with a few things from there, said fuck it and went to proton [22:11:44] Varies [22:12:28] Some servers retry pretty quickly, some can be hours [22:12:36] They should try a fair few times though [22:14:39] what do you think would be a general safe window of most probably wont lose anything in this timeframe [22:14:59] also @raidarr what did you mean by pop3 [22:20:54] as compared to server held emails with imap, but you already clarified that wasn't the issue per se [22:21:15] ah [22:23:18] 1 day [22:32:25] Hm [22:32:40] eh for now I’ll probably use proton or disroot [22:39:45] @rhinosf1 how do you do your own email [22:39:50] on your domain [23:07:11] wasn’t expecting to hear Hamilton followed by moana playing in a wedding after party [23:34:59] IA boosted this https://mastodon.archive.org/@textfiles/113289976366997946
