[02:53:15] According to one of my friends who is a guy pretending to be a girl. [02:53:20] Anyway, [02:53:23] Hello Miraheze chat. [02:53:31] Today is TUESDAY in California. [02:54:33] Shoot! shoots redlinks out to the editor's pen [02:59:16] [1/2] I found a really old photo of one of my dogs that her foster mom had sent us 🥺 she used to be so small and now she's like 110 pounds [02:59:16] [2/2] https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/615786602454581249/1496344611503734815/FB_IMG_1553555621899.jpg?ex=69e98b04&is=69e83984&hm=faaf16549da7c2b362005b33e0183ddc4ab3859790c9bcbb293c5e76abc8e866& [02:59:31] fearsome protector [07:41:36] it's basically an "investment" [14:15:49] yo this dog menacing [18:21:47] [1/2] https://discord.com/channels/563020189604773888/811970093755531264/1496541379482878188 [18:21:47] [2/2] For those who are in fandom discussion and wants to..... read some tea :stare: [18:45:28] What's it about so I can decide whether it's worth rejoining for the discussion [18:49:32] it's already over lol [18:51:45] but the latest messages from one of the editor should sum up [20:12:36] I can’t see it [22:33:41] Yeah but what was it about [23:33:49] [1/2] Essentially they had a roundtable to discuss Fandom's future as a social hub; they know Discussions are difficult to moderate and sometimes spammy, so they asked a variety of questions regarding things like 1) would ppl flock to it more if high-quality posts were surfaced, 2) if ppl would like it if Discussions were spun off entirely separate from the wiki (a "Star Wars" Discussi [23:33:49] [2/2] ons feed that pulled from multiple wikis, for example), 3) basically how to maximize the tool to create stickiness and user engagement without overburdening admins/mods or lowering the quality of the wiki. They directly mentioned that they want to focus on social tools due to, in part, AI overviews reducing clickthrough traffic [23:34:36] Overall editors/admins were mostly exasperated with Fandom trying to become a social network again but I give the staff credit for remaining calm in the face of what was some pretty blunt feedback [23:37:46] Ouch, that's fun [23:37:54] do they still rate limit deletions to 9 actions a minute [23:38:05] They don't have ads in Discussions yet though? [23:39:30] So those social tools aren't currently creating revenue that AI is otherwise taking from them [23:43:01] God if they do then that is terrifying 😭 I never messed about with Discussions tbh but that wouldn't surprise me [23:45:06] Yeah but they want to get more eyes I'd imagine, especially with their new "ad lite" experience - if you're logged in but not an active editor, you no longer get zero ads. So if they have ppl wanting to discuss, they have to log in, at which point the non-editors will get served ads [23:46:25] The direction they're going is really interesting because [23:47:00] They had to kill a lot of usability because of brand safety, conditioned by their ad providers [23:47:59] But they knew they were killing usability, so they instead resorted to methods of getting more people to create accounts [23:48:17] [1/2] now imagine having a a case where a few users had accidentally duplicated messages and you as an admin wanted to delete the dupes. first off you need to hover over the three dots (no accessibility features so you needed to move your mouse), then click delete, then there might have been a confirmation prompt so that's 3 clicks. then you had to deal with [23:48:18] [2/2] those rate limits despite being a moderator action, which is extremely easy to hit, so you'd be waiting for like 50 seconds to be able to delete anything again [23:48:29] Because more accounts means more engagement, the engagement that they lost due to brand safety before [23:49:04] And now because they expect so many non-editors to have accounts they had to introduce ads for logged in users as to not lose that revenue [23:49:33] This would be enough to make me learn php oh my god [23:49:55] exactly, it is eating its own tail [23:50:04] They added confirmation prompts to that shit??? [23:50:20] They weren't there back when I had to moderate at least [23:51:52] I can't remember exactly, it was a long time ago [23:51:59] I might be hallucinating [23:52:43] I would go in and test it but I lost my admin rights when we forked 😶‍🌫️ [23:52:45] but the one that really annoyed me was lack of accessibility features, like cmon I don't want to move my hand all the way to my mouse [23:53:37] If they didn't have keyboard shortcuts, oof [23:53:53] They've done some work on ax in general but not on Discussions I think [23:54:19] And tbf they did acknowledge that the editor in Discussions needs work [23:54:25] me when I make a button then stuff it inside a `
` [23:54:50] We've all been there [23:54:56] like cmon I think they were using React or Vue or something there's no need to avoid using `button` [23:54:56] The software we use for discussions at UT/DR has a "select this post and below" which is a lifesaver sometimes [23:54:57] Some of us are still there [23:55:06] No more spamming the delete button on every post [23:56:03] Hopefully they'll get those much-needed upgrades! A lot of people mentioned that moderation of those posts was a lot of work and that a lot of spam/TS-breaking stuff isn't auto-caughy [23:57:09] they did have an abuse filter which at least would catch such awful words as the n-word, the r-word (although that was more of a logging thing, never actually prevented anyone from posting), and "miraheze" [23:58:08] ...
