Basically it just disrupts wikitext constructs like subst: and disappears on transclusion/preload so the wikitext construct starts working there. You could also do {{<includeonly>subst:</includeonly> or whatever. The point is just to make sure that the subst: isn't successfully parsed and applied when you save the template pa <clipped message>
