[09:56:31] Hi everyone, [09:56:33] I'm volunteering for the Announcements task of Wikimedia Hackathon 2023 (https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T335119) and would like to ask a couple of questions: [09:56:34] a. is it acceptable (apart from fun) to engage a bot in this group for in-time announcements? The plan is to make a bot that sends out announcements of various notable upcoming events (eg sessions/lunch/dinner/..) during WH2023, a few minutes before their due time, so that we (the volunteers group) do not forget important announcements. [09:56:36] b. (if the answer to a is yes) how do I add by bot in this group. [09:56:38] Thanks in advance! [16:32:47] It may be useful to make a wiki page that describes roughly what one day's worth of announcements might look like, and so we can evaluate how much signal/noise there is? (re @DimitriosRingas: Hi everyone, [16:32:48] I'm volunteering for the Announcements task of Wikimedia Hackathon 2023 (https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T335119)...) [16:33:16] Personally, I think it may be useful, but only if it's not a constant chattering of stuff we ignore :) (re @DimitriosRingas: Hi everyone, [16:33:18] I'm volunteering for the Announcements task of Wikimedia Hackathon 2023 (https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T335119)...) [18:26:59] One way is to enable topics here. The main topic is this chat here. Create a second one for announcements of the hackathon. Those who wants to ignore the announcements can just mute the announcement topic. [18:34:36] when the idea of enabling topics was brought up in the wikimedia general channel, it was very controversial. they don't work in older clients and might also break the existing bots [18:35:53] oh yeah.. it certainly broke all the bots when it first came out. the telegram APIs have been updated though. [18:43:50] this channel is also bridged to IRC though, I have no idea how that's supposed to work with topics [18:43:51] I have no idea how the irc bridge would handle it, for example, even if the bridge bot understands topics, and in general making a big change to the way this channel works only a week before the next event is probably not a sensible idea [18:43:57] jinx!
