[14:36:48] Hey Everyone, Scholarship applications for Wikimedia Hackathon are still OPEN! [14:36:49] If you plan to apply for a scholarship to the, be quick! The deadline to apply is 5th January 2024. [14:36:50] Use this link to apply: pretix.eu/wikimedia/wmhackathon2024/ [14:44:05] Hey Maarten, we’re scheduled to announce in early January. [14:44:05] [14:44:07] The team is working to expedite the process and I’d keep you updated! I hope this helps (re @MaartenDammers: When will the venue be announced? Looking at hotel options and I don't want to be other side of town.) [15:47:08] is next year's hackathon going to be inaccessible again? [15:59:25] (by which I am, as always, asking whether you're finally going to have someone doing subtitles/transcripts, and if not, how many more years I'm going to have to wait to get equal access to events) [16:07:04] The talks didn't get streamed/recorded last year, did they? [16:07:59] they did try to stream a couple of things, but the quality was apparently so bad people couldn't understand it [16:22:50] I think the main point of the hackathon is to meet in person. Especially for people who have already met online. Accessibility is of course important first all sponsored meetups but I think it’s less important first a hackathon than for e.g. wikimania (re @Nikki: is next year's hackathon going to be inaccessible again?) [16:23:11] First=for [17:15:03] while other people get to decide which events we're allowed to have access to, we do not have equal access (re @Jane023: I think the main point of the hackathon is to meet in person. Especially for people who have already met online. Accessibility i...) [17:16:09] I didn't understand any of the opening session, closing season, or any of the other talks at this year's. apparently someone mentioned me at one point, and I only found out because someone else told me [17:20:32] the only thing I *could* take part in were one-on-one conversations [17:25:56] (and I've completely given up on wikimania, didn't even bother with it this year) [17:56:57] I do think wikimania is more valuable for newcomers to the movement. (re @Nikki: (and I've completely given up on wikimania, didn't even bother with it this year)) [17:58:13] These might also be the most valuable part. After all, most general openings and closings will not have much that insiders here have not already heard. (re @Nikki: the only thing I *could* take part in were one-on-one conversations) [17:58:37] And if there are new insights, they will show up here [18:00:03] maybe I'll just not bother with the hackathon either then [18:00:33] fighting for accessibility is so draining [18:00:43] especially when people just turn round and say you don't need it anyway [18:06:34] Fair enough. Definitely something the organisers should take on board if they elect to keep trying to make the event "hybrid". (re @Nikki: they did try to stream a couple of things, but the quality was apparently so bad people couldn't understand it) [18:56:26] It’s so hard to do a/v production for one-of locations. You need pre-event access to the room, you need at least 1 person per setup (experienced with av production). You need copious amounts of equipment that you either rent, or fly around the world (which means you also need someone to maintain that crap), or work with the material of the location which is almost never a succe [18:56:26] s. The hardware depreciates faster than you can blink your eyes.. [18:56:28] [18:56:29] Sufficient power, cables, internet. It adds up real fast. [18:57:04] Having said that, remembering how much fixed A/V the main WMF office used to have and how little they use it…. At the very least we could invest in a flight case with 20 Rode Wireless Go II mics or something, so we at least have decent audio when needed. [22:44:14] * bd808 sees wm-bb back in the iRC channel [22:44:49] Working on it now. It looks like the bouncer that the bot runs through on the irc side restarted and things didn’t automatically fix themselves (re @siebrand: @bd808 ?) [22:47:49] Broadly I would say money is the main constraint that keeps hackathons from having full featured video/audio/transcriptions. Y’all may or may not be amazed to find out that the folks who control the high level budgets are quite often skeptical of the value returned by hackathons. [22:50:28] Damnit. The UI prevents me from using the unicorn 🦄 reaction. (re @bd808: Broadly I would say money is the main constraint that keeps hackathons from having full featured video/audio/transcriptions. Y’a...) [22:50:38] https://tools-static.wmflabs.org/bridgebot/c900f89f/file_55727.webp [22:53:49] It has been at least 3 years since I personally heard someone say they should be stopped all together, which is actually stress relieving for me personally. It was never fun to debate their entire existence in the middle of an annual planning cycle. [23:08:52] And Telegram and IRC are bridged once again [23:08:58] Ty Bryan!
