[05:39:57] @urbanecm May I have your DM? I need helps! [07:42:31] Feel free to PM, I might be a bit slower to respond ATM though. (re @cvictorovich: @urbanecm May I have your DM? I need helps!) [07:44:59] We still don't know 🄲 (re @cvictorovich: Is it related to natural causes?) [07:54:26] This was apparently misinformation spread by Reuters and then Wikipedia (now removed, see the talk page). (re @tuukkahastrup: Perhaps. "REN said the outage was due to "temperature variations in Spain" causing a rare atmospheric phenomenon. This induced o...) [08:02:42] Yes, it wasn't confirmed by any other authority. The situation is calmer now, basic systems are on, but still recovering from many others. (re @tuukkahastrup: This was apparently misinformation spread by Reuters and then Wikipedia (now removed, see the talk page).) [09:52:58] Hello everyone, [09:52:58] As a local person, I’ve had a bit more access to information and have been in contact with the hotel regarding the building’s earthquake standards. I wanted to share what I’ve learned, in case it helps clarify things for anyone else. The summary is as below: [09:53:00] First of all, a major earthquake has been expected in this region since 1766, with an estimated recurrence interval of around 250 years, so technically, it’s overdue. While we don’t know exactly when it will happen, many scientists agree that such an event is likely at some point. That said, this has been the situation for many years, and there is no [09:53:00] indication it will occur during the event. [09:53:01] Regarding the building: [09:53:03] I have added the municipality report aboutĀ Bakırkƶy (https://depremzemin.ibb.istanbul/uploads/prefix-bakirkoy-666ad51994cd5.pdf), and you can see all the districts fromĀ here (https://depremzemin.ibb.istanbul/tr/olasi-deprem-kayip-tahminleri-ilce-kitapciklari). [09:53:04] The hotel provided me with an earthquake certificate, which I’ve attached along with an image to text and later auto-translated txt file. It states that the building did not sustain damage from the 1999 earthquake (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PIA22412_%E2%80%93_Turkish_Fault_Reveals_Seismic_Steadiness.jpg) (7.4 magnitude, approx. 65 km away). This [09:53:04] document follows [09:53:06] the 1998 building regulations, which were less strict than those enforced after 1999. While it’s good to know the building withstood that previous earthquake, the expected future event is estimated to be between 7.2–7.6 magnitude and 15–20 km from the venue so conditions could be different. [09:53:07] The hotel also shared their emergency plan, which is good to see. [09:53:09] Additionally, the hotel told me (both verbally and in writing) that they have a seismic base isolation system (also known as a rail system). I asked for a document confirming this twice, but they responded that they don’t have any documentation available to share. [09:53:10] That's all I learned. [09:55:06] oh, I am unable to share the earthquake certificate the hotel shared with me from this group due to attachment constraints. I can send it through private message to anyone interested. [10:00:50] Perhaps you could [[phab:file/|upload it to Phabricator]] and then share that here (re @neslihanturann: oh, I am unable to share the earthquake certificate the hotel shared with me from this group due to attachment constraints. I ca...) [10:24:10] I saw Edward Betts last night, anyone else want to meet today or tonight? for a museum or meal or just walking around. [10:24:38] + maybe some wikishootme [10:45:54] Dear all, [10:45:55] I'm Zafer Batik from WMTR. I am also a local person who lives here and will stay in the hotel during the event where most of you (scholarship recipients) will stay. Be sure that we are taking all steps for your safety. The hotel is quite safe, and they are responding to all security needs. We will share more information about this soon with you. [14:34:09] By the way, for those around Istanbul or on their way to the Hackathon, if you see interesting life forms and are curious about their id and/or want to share with the world, there is a bioblitz event on iNaturalist: [14:34:10] https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/wikimedia-hackathon-2025-bioblitz [14:34:12] If anyone has any questions about this, just let me know! [14:34:13] I'll be working on a rewrite of a tool that connects inat to Commons (https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T392822) during the Hackathon, so you'll also be helping with fresh examples :) [14:40:28] cool, I'm planning on doing some iNaturalistReviewer work as well (not attending in person, unfortunately) [14:42:22] hoping to at least get automatic reviewing for sounds working, then see about possibly adding SDC support [14:52:39] O it’s Harej [15:30:43] The bazaars are amazing. So many shops. It just goes on and on. : https://tools-static.wmflabs.org/bridgebot/01a2134f/file_70205.jpg [19:18:08] Hello! this might be a bit silly of me to ask but I checked the Turkish Airlines website and the answer is not entirely clear to me. Do those of us who have been granted a Wikimedia Foundation Scholarship have any checked-in luggage allowance included as part of the pre-booked flight? [19:25:33] Scroll to bottom and click "Baggage" : https://tools-static.wmflabs.org/bridgebot/847eadf3/file_70208.jpg [19:26:32] Hello! Yes, as a scholar, you can check a bag and get it reimbursed afterwards. We apologize for this, but for a short time when doing reservations, we had a snafu with booking and some flights did not get any bags allowed. (re @nacaru: Hello! this might be a bit silly of me to ask but I checked my reservation through the Turkish Airlines website and the answer i...) [19:27:10] Thank you! [19:28:38] I saw this but at the top I also saw this and it's a bit confusing 🄲 : https://tools-static.wmflabs.org/bridgebot/01879b74/file_70209.jpg [19:29:49] It says same thing for me too [19:31:11] Anyway knowing this I'll just carry a small case with me apart from my hand-luggage backpack, if I ended up having to pay for it at check-in I will let the organisers know and have it reimbursed. No problem! (re @deb_t: Hello! Yes, as a scholar, you can check a bag and get it reimbursed afterwards. We apologize for this, but for a short time when...) [19:31:40] Yup, same for you too. You'll just need to reimburse it afterwards. šŸ™ (re @nerim4n: It says same thing for me too) [19:32:01] thanks! [19:32:27] Was anyone able to request a meal with dietary restrictions to Turkish Airlines? [19:34:18] yes - you can do that while ā€œmanaging your flightā€ on the Turkish Airlines site. it is a bit buried on the page, but as long as you request it within 24 hrs of your flight, it should be good to go. (re @arcstur: Was anyone able to request a meal with dietary restrictions to Turkish Airlines?) [19:34:39] Only after check in opens? [19:35:18] You can do it now here I think : https://tools-static.wmflabs.org/bridgebot/17a2508b/file_70210.jpg [19:35:34] Not in the app but yes on the website (re @arcstur: Was anyone able to request a meal with dietary restrictions to Turkish Airlines?) [19:36:28] I was actually able to select the meal from the app itself (re @tuukkahastrup: Not in the app but yes on the website) [19:37:36] For me, the app gives an error saying I cannot use the app before the check-in opens 🤷 (re @Angel_804: I was actually able to select the meal from the app itself) [19:40:13] yes but not within 24 hours and Turkish doesn't know how to do math to figure is it more than 24 hours to go. IIRC. (re @arcstur: Was anyone able to request a meal with dietary restrictions to Turkish Airlines?) [19:40:54] So what's written below in the baggage section doesn't mean anything? (re @deb_t: Yup, same for you too. You'll just need to reimburse it afterwards. šŸ™) [19:41:52] yes, they will ask you to pay for the bag when you check in at the airport (re @nerim4n: So what's written below in the baggage section doesn't mean anything?) [19:58:08] Now I was able to access it in the app (menu>Manage booking>Manage booking>outgoing flight>Food&Beverage), and I see the same miscalculation of 24 hours. But on the website, the choice is still available (re @jeremy_b: yes but not within 24 hours and Turkish doesn't know how to do math to figure is it more than 24 hours to go. IIRC.) [20:02:12] Turkish? should be able to see in app also.here's for my return flight. : https://tools-static.wmflabs.org/bridgebot/1b901b95/file_70212.jpg [20:06:16] interesting : https://tools-static.wmflabs.org/bridgebot/2caccde1/file_70213.jpg [20:06:57] interesting : https://tools-static.wmflabs.org/bridgebot/40bb4623/file_70214.jpg [20:13:44] yeah i have the same (re @nerim4n: interesting) [20:15:13] yes, some scholars did not have the 0 bags allowed when their booking was created - it all worked well for you the first time! šŸ™‚ [20:15:21] While at the same time, in the fare rules... : https://tools-static.wmflabs.org/bridgebot/9b7f05b1/file_70215.jpg [20:21:15] What are the safety instructions in case of an earthquake? How will we be warned about one coming, e.g will there be any sirens, warning about an incoming earthquake? What are we supposed to do when we get such a warning? [20:24:41] some Turkish routes are economy 23kg each bag and business is 32kg each bag. (and then separately figure out how many bags which could be 0) [20:24:42] but it looks like other routes they regulate the combined total weight of all checked bags? you can use the calculator. but it doesn't show my 3 bag allowance, idk how I got that. https://www.turkishairlines.com/en-us/any-questions/checked-baggage/ [20:26:36] I thought you only maybe have double digit seconds of warning? but yes would be good to know about any notifications to watch for. [20:26:53] We will go over this during our opening ceremony on Friday morning, however, feel free to watch this video for more information: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZeI0X40EEY (re @Tohaomg: What are the safety instructions in case of an earthquake? (re @tehreedy: That's what I mean... Most hotels (especially bigger chain-y type ones) usually oblige) [20:49:12] I've dropped a bag at a hotel a week or more before I was staying there... For the last... long time I've been working on building a database of citations that appear on English Wikipedia. Here is a prototype to look at. https://wikipediacitations.scatter.red [23:57:52] I am interested to know about any bugs (I know about missing pages and that if a revision had malformatted wikitext it can create junk in the database).
