[03:03:13] removed 😀 (re @robertsky: ^spams.) [05:30:19] has something changed? people from the wmf were telling us that loading files from toolforge is against the privacy policy because it's third-party content, forcibly removed some code that did, and were talking about making it so that it's not even possible to load external scripts (re @jeremy_b: you could move it to gitlab and use new tool from @bd808 and then you [05:30:19] can take contr [05:30:21] ibutions from anyone.) [05:47:57] this ferry? it works for me : https://tools-static.wmflabs.org/bridgebot/f6e53438/file_70468.jpg [05:57:19] You can also go from Bostancı, there are more often ferry. https://maps.app.goo.gl/eg66DpiCmwE9Q4en8 : https://tools-static.wmflabs.org/bridgebot/04d0231b/file_70469.jpg [06:31:25] Not sure if there were two similar initiatives, but what I recall is that there was an effort to get Toolforge-hosted tools (and maybe also wiki-hosted tools like gadgets and user scripts) to stop loading resources from third-party CDNs since those collect analytics that go against our privacy policy, and instead use the mirrors of the same resources hosted in [06:31:25] our cloud infrastructure. [06:31:25] I'm not sure if wiki-hosted tools loading content from Toolforge was ever discouraged on the same grounds, though it does sound plausible that it might be technically challenging if Toolforge didn't support serving those resources with the right mime type (which IIUC is what this proxy solves). [06:31:27] That said, do take this with a grain of salt because I haven't been following this topic too closely. (re @Nikki: has something changed? people from the wmf were telling us that loading files from toolforge is against the privacy policy becau...) [07:31:40] I've also not been following especially closely, would help if Nikki or Nikki had examples. what's the difference between the 2 copies of Nikki here? :) (re @waldyrious: Not sure if there were two similar initiatives, but what I recall is that there was an effort to get Toolforge-hosted tools (and...) [07:50:27] I'm very interested about best practices for gadgets/scripts development and deploy. [07:53:13] shall we make a thread? @Krinkle24 (re @Katie: this ferry? it works for me) [07:57:30] For the wikibase ecosystem, I think being able to control them on a place such as gitlab, And have versioned usage rolled out across wikibas es sounds amazing (re @IsmaelOlea: I'm very interested about best practices for gadgets/scripts development and deploy. Related: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org...) [08:05:51] Two options mainly: [08:05:52] * Kabatas-Adalar: This will take 1h30min to Buyukada (the main island) and would leave around 14:00. Dom and I are taking the Kabatas option as it starts closer to here. [08:05:54] * Bostaci-Buyukada: This starts from the Asian side so you'd have to make it there first. Other than that indeed nice, more frequent and faster ferry. cc @jeremy_b [08:05:55] There is also Eminonu ferry, from the city side. While this starts nearest from us, it doesn't go to the island. It goes only to the other side of Istanbul and then you'd have to take a second ferry to the island. More complex option. [08:05:57] Either way we will meet on the island of course! Take what's most comfortable / least confusing for you. (re @Katie: this ferry? it works for me) [08:20:32] I still thing the approach that Gergo suggested a stone years ago would work well: make an extension that can associate a wiki page with a file in a git repo (e.g. put the relevant info into a slot). Then mal a slot page that allows such pages to pull the latest version from git, switch branch, go to a tag, etc. [08:20:33] making it work for a group of pages, rather than a single page, it's slightly more tricky. could model directories as subpages and manage the git access at the root... [08:20:47] This seems simple, flexible, and powerful. [08:21:43] So basically purge the page. Or have the page somehow dynamically check everyday, if it needs a new update? [08:21:43] And store the revisioned content in revisions? (re @Daniel: I still thing the approach that Gergo suggested a stone years ago would work well: make an extension that can associate a wiki p...) [08:23:14] no, nothing so magical. just make a button that mashes a new revision of the page based on whatever is on git. nothing changes on the wiki without someone clicking that button. That protects against hacks and leaves local communities in control. (re @addshore: So basically purge the page. Or have the page somehow dynamically check everyday, if it needs a new update? [08:23:15] And store the revis...) [08:23:33] Also, all changes are visible in the page history, you can simply revert, etc [08:27:33] it's pull, not push. if you want mass updates across wikis, use a bot. that again gives local community control over allowing that bot. [08:27:56] how is this new proxy + gitlab not those things also? (re @Daniel: This seems simple, flexible, and powerful.) [08:30:44] what new proxy? (re @jeremy_b: how is this new proxy + gitlab not those things also?) [08:31:27] this new proxy (presented at showcase) (re @jeremy_b: https://gitlab-content.toolforge.org/) [08:32:27] it doesn't have the same kind of local control/local history. but it does have history. and projects don't have to use it at all. [08:32:53] It was skipped in the presentation (re @jeremy_b: this new proxy (presented at showcase)) [08:33:12] but the use case above was for inclusion in a user js, nothing sitewide [08:34:23] maybe I more clearly remember preparation for presentation than the presentation on stage? I thought it happened. (re @sjoerddebruin: It was skipped in the presentation) [08:37:20] yea, it seems nifty, but the security implications are somewhat scary if you use it for site wide scripts, gadgets, etc. Code run by millions of users in their browser could change without supervision by the community or wmf. (re @jeremy_b: but the use case above was for inclusion in a user js, nothing sitewide) [08:38:00] I thought a lot about this sort of bot access across multiple wiki sites. [08:38:01] For example, I have thousand media wiki sites, And I want to propose an edit across all of them. [08:38:03] Turns out doing that is a giant pain 🤣 need to make and maintain thousands of accounts. (re @Daniel: it's pull, not push. if you want mass updates across wikis, use a bot. that again gives local community control over allowing th...) [08:38:25] The "copy from git" button say seem clunky, but I really like the "wiki-ness" of it. No magic, eves is a page, all the normal tools and processes for quality control just work. [08:39:50] Talk to Halley about that user case, she'll love it! it's exactly the kind of thing we want to fix with better support for "developer accounts". [08:41:31] ...but you are talking about non-wmf wikis, right @addshore? [08:42:03] Yup (re @Daniel: ...but you are talking about non-wmf wikis, right @addshore?) [08:43:15] It's even worse when you think about making a single tool and interface to act across multiple 3rd part hosted sites, for either navigation and or editing. [08:43:16] You start needing to manually create 1000 oauth consumers, all of which require manual approval etc :p, [08:46:15] just leave a backdoor 😉 (re @addshore: It's even worse when you think about making a single tool and interface to act across multiple 3rd part hosted sites, for either...) [10:14:40] This assumes each wiki wants their own version of the gadget with ability to fork/hotpatch/diverge any time. While useful for some, i imagine in most cases the popular gadgets will continue to be loaded from a central wiki.
