Its original purpose is unknown, but various theories have been proposed: that it was a temple dedicated to Zeus or the Cabeiri, or that it was built by Caesar Galerius as his mausoleum or as a throne hall within the palace complex. The Ladadika district is packed with restaurants and bars of all kinds. Just across Tsimiski street, Ano Ladadika is known for its lively cafes and nightlife. Platia Athonos is another area filled with traditional tavernas, while Nikis Avenue—the start of the promenade—is lined with cafes and bars along the waterfront. [18:49:42] For something quick and local, try gyros for lunch or dinner, and bougatsa for breakfast or brunch. You’ll also find koulouri (a sesame bread ring) sold by street vendors or in local bakeries. For coffee try frappé, a symbol of Thessaloniki's relaxed life. If you are into alcohol, obviously you can try ouzo and tsipouro with or without anise served with meze.
