[14:30:14] there's something happening here, at the site of the 2027 Hackathon, what it is isn't exactly clear https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flamingo_Revolution [14:53:39] There are some countries in which some folks are unhappy with some government plans or decisions. Sounds pretty clear (and common) to me. (re @Bill: there's something happening here, at the site of the 2027 Hackathon, what it is isn't exactly clear https://en.wikipedia.org/wik...) [15:01:03] We're also very much far enough out that if something escalated far enough to be problematic, that there is time to review options [15:04:07] to be fair, we had a GLAM Conference in Armenia just right after https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_Armenian_Revolution and nobody was hurt [15:04:31] we as in "wikipedians", unfortunately I wasn't there to see it [15:04:34] Yeah, it wouldn't be the first Wikimedia event adjacent to local... complexities :) [15:07:37] I just recalled we had a Wikimania in 2011 in Haifa, in a place where literally in front of it there were a local happening of the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Israeli_social_justice_protests [15:08:52] and that one I experienced in person, nothing happened, everything was perfect [15:44:32] Istanbul hackathon happened during https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2025%E2%80%932026_Turkish_protests [15:46:22] and this was the first day of hackathon: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cp8jdk9jlgpo [16:04:32] I'm disappointed that on Commons I cannot find the sticker "Somebody should do something" [16:04:59] that I've seen on the table of the last wmhack [16:08:10] heh [16:08:40] It's clear we must have somebody to do something about it [16:11:07] "Have organizers explicitly tell you in an email to avoid protests" is the traditional (slightly boring) approach. [16:13:15] they did that on Istanbul, we received an email about that [16:51:47] To be fair again, local Wikipedians partaking in the protests were arrested during this. (And a fairness on this, I don't think they were Hackathon participants.) (re @nemoralis: The Istanbul hackathon took place during https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2025%E2%80%932026_Turkish_protests)
