[07:02:41] dcausse I will update the url list [07:11:13] ebernhardson: I think calling that alert anything else than CirrusSearchIndexGoingInsane is a missed opportunity :) [10:48:11] errand + lunch [11:25:08] lunch/break [11:37:05] lunch [13:37:01] quick errand, back in 20' [14:20:22] greetings [14:21:54] Food for thought? https://dkb.io/post/google-search-is-dying [14:22:15] o/ [14:28:55] I think google is getting annoying for "some" users, esp. the expert ones that like to control/understand the direct relationship between their query and the results they see [14:29:49] I've definitely noticed it too, but duckduckgo seems just as bad. [14:32:39] we're going to miss altavista.digital.com :) [14:50:05] ryankemper: I pushed https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/wikidata/query/deploy/+/763241 (wdqs 0.3.103 release you made last monday). I need it for the flink application, I'll let you run scap to finish the classic deploy when you have time [14:58:30] dcausse, zpapierski (and other), if you have time to review the Blazegraph evaluation criteria (work in progress): https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qKDRm_GT9YEcjiQ_6GJd7NQYHXaZj3u9VL0lu5ZBrq0/edit [14:58:58] sure adding this to my todo list [15:04:29] dcausse LOL, altavista [15:39:21] \o [15:39:36] o/ [15:42:11] re:google, some people blame the downfall on Amit Singhal, head of google search until ~2016. He was, at least reportedly, very against unexplainable search and prevented movement into NN based search. Once he left the rumor is they went in big on unexplainability, gave wins for the 80% but makes things worse for techies and other leading-edge ppl [15:42:46] i guess blame is maybe the wrong direction there, the implication is he was holding back the tide :) [15:43:00] I do miss Altavista because it had an advanced search that let you construct complex boolean queries with AND, OR, NOT, and parens—and it was awesome! Very targeted searching back when ranking wasn't great. [17:47:02] Not sure who to tag on this question but Amazon/Alexa is interested in querying WCQS for image metadata for their service. They are asking if there is an API or other way they can query without having to use the WCQS UI from the web browser, and I wasn't sure where to point them [17:47:39] Also, does any one know if/how they can access the SDC dumps? or is that a question for the SD team? [18:41:09] cbogen_: they can issue queries to the backend the same way the UI does, they will still have to do the OAuth flow. Everything in https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikidata_Query_Service/User_Manual#SPARQL_endpoint should still be true for WCQS, just replace the domain name [18:41:46] hmm, i guess everything is a stretch, categories wont be on wcqs, dunno about DCAT-AP either [18:42:04] but the sparql api, content-formats accepted, etc. all stays same [18:42:45] ok thanks! looks like we need to update https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:SPARQL_query_service [18:43:23] Fun thing from the unmeeting. We were talking about forced perspective in the Lord of the Rings movies. I forgot that they came up with a new technique to allow camera movement in forced perspective shots, by putting the actors and parts of the set on linked dollys that moved when the camera moved. 2½ minute video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWMFpxkGO_s [19:00:37] random thought...but in trying to figure out why we seem to manage less lately i was making a rough list of what i did in the past. The list really drops off around dec/jan 2019. I suppose i haven't thought of covid as being such a driver but it could be more signficant than i've given credit for [19:03:00] that's interesting, i'd love to hear more about what you feel like you could manage pre-covid that you aren't anymore [19:03:04] covid is a very real blocker! [19:04:09] cbogen_: more just listing things we build, in jun 16 we did textcat, by sept 16 we were doing bm25/elastic 6 uprade, feb 2017 we were on to sister search, by apr we started building mjolnir. etc. I feel like we haven't been making that kind of progress lately [19:05:17] were those projects the same level of complexity as the ones we're doing now? [19:05:43] cbogen_: textcat is the only one that is more isolated, the rest of this are fairly large architecture changes [19:06:03] interesting [19:06:06] maybe we are just drowing under the complexity of those changes though :) Hard to say [19:06:23] well none of those are wdqs related, so there's that :) [19:06:54] indeed :) [19:58:30] lunch [19:58:38] Speaking of COVID, mask mandates and most restrictions are lifted in Switzerland as of tomorrow ! [21:37:31] back
