I have a quick regarding regarding handling redirects to mobile domain. [16:22:15] From what I see we have both the code in MobileFrontend extension and sub in varnish that both almost do the same. [16:23:05] Do we ever hit the MF redirection code on Wikipedias or is the Varnish fully responsible for handling redirects? [16:25:39] Varnish certainly handles at least some of the mobile redirects, and I'm guessing probably almost all of them -- [16:26:15] I opened up chrome devtools and turned on mobile emulation and went to a random wiki page, and I see in the network tab `X-Cache-Status: int-front` response header [16:26:25] which means "internally generated by the CDN" [16:26:52] from a quick glance at turnilo, the CDN is generating about 2x as many 302s as the services behind the CDN are [16:27:01] but it's hard to say which of those are mobile redirects without actually digging into the log [16:27:38] (comparing https://w.wiki/7pFC vs https://w.wiki/7pFE ) [16:27:40] no need to dive deep into it - I’m just collecting info/getting better understanding [16:29:34] My understanding is that we need this mobile redirect in Varnish for anon users, I just started to think - do we call the MF for logged in users or do we fully rely on Varnish. [16:30:04] But I’m asking as I’m curious - because I’m going to do some knowledge sharing sessions and it’s something I don’t know. [16:34:37] I don't think it's just anon users, it's also a sizable latency win for any of our users outside the USA [16:51:56] brett: any reason the doc in https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T349120 has to be private [16:52:17] Can it be published somewhere for the world to see your thoughts [17:12:42] RhinosF1: Ah, didn't realize that was private. The doc is kind of a mess right now and someone is tasked with cleaning it up before anything else is really done, so don't worry, nothing's moving until more people have seen it :) [17:13:21] brett: if it stays in a google doc, it'll stay private. Would be nice if the thoughts were documented somewhere. [17:15:36] RhinosF1: The goal is to explicitly solicit feedback and present it during the next SRE meeting [17:16:07] How do non SREs understand the why? [17:16:30] RhinosF1: I'm not trying to keep it secret, I'm just not the owner and don't know whether lmata is ready for it to be consumed? [17:16:33] * RhinosF1 thinks wikimedia are a really good example of keeping a lot public and it's very useful [17:16:47] brett: cool, I'll wait for lmata to comment then [17:17:29] Hi RhinosF1, this is on me, we’ll be circulating that doc in about 2 weeks once we disambiguate a couple of things internally. My apologies [17:26:02] lmata: thanks :)
