[01:35:01] Newsletter 55: Diversity and Equity and Wikifunctions https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Abstract_Wikipedia/Updates/2021-12-09 [13:03:21] Hm, is mobile-first content creation within scope of Abstract Wiki? How about offline first? There's a potential to reach a way larger number of editors than, some of them might be in far from ideal network conditions. [13:03:47] *than with current siloed wikis [13:04:51] Even more that will use a smartphone as a primary/only device [13:10:37] What differs in content (that is, not rendering) of a mobile first article on Wikipedia? Is there any Wikipedia version that has separate mobile versions of articles? (re @mlazowik: Hm, is mobile-first content creation within scope of Abstract Wiki? How about offline first? There's a potential to reach a way larger number of editors than, some of them might be in far from ideal network conditions.) [13:11:13] I mean usability of the editing interface on small-ish touch screens [13:12:39] And starting right away with that, instead of being an afterthought [13:45:21] Ah, your emphasis was on creation, not content, I see. [15:01:15] Yes, regarding mobile first [15:01:29] No, we haven't not yet considered offline first [15:01:57] That sounds challenging, given how many different resources need to be pulled together [15:09:09] I think it would make sense to try to make it more robust and work better with patchy connections even if working completely offline is too hard [15:11:05] like if my browser crashes or I have to restart it, in wikidata I'll lose any unsaved changes, because it doesn't store my unsaved changes locally [15:21:06] and wikidata also doesn't seem to have any local caching/reuse of entity lookups, e.g. if I click add statement, it does a network request to get the property suggestions, if I click it again, it makes the same request again and I presume it will fail to show suggestions if that request fails, rather than reusing the original suggestions... things like that [16:20:57] Oh that would be cool indeed. And also sounds quite possible.
