[07:11:39] Apart from using function call in composition. can you use it in Javascript or python in wikifunction? [14:18:01] Not yet [15:24:30] Alright 🙂 thank you (re @vrandecic: Not yet) [18:51:18] I read the latest Status Update https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Abstract_Wikipedia/Updates/2023-07-12 I am not sure if I support that funding. The Rockefeller Foundation has a difficult past and I am not sure how far what happened in the past was clarified and the people who experienced bad treatment got support from the Rockefeller Foundation. Have you investigated before accept [18:51:19] ing the funding how far that happened. Outside of this fact I am not sure how many funding is really needed for Abstract Wikipedia and if the goal is maybe to ambitious and simpler solutions that can be developed by volunteers would be better at least for the beginning. Volunteers people are from my point of view people who get no money for their work and who are not doing it for [18:51:20] academic research. I think the number of people who are volunteers according to this definition involved in the NLG working group is low. [20:17:30] So you’re going to supply the $1 million in funding instead, right? [20:18:19] Volunteers have already been doing this. They need much better tools. This is what this enables, more forms of volunteering [20:23:35] And as one of those “volunteers,” I find making platforms depend entirely on volunteers extremely unsustainable. I stopped volunteering for a reason. [20:33:08] Hogü, larger donations are approved by the Board of the Foundation, and yes, the Foundation does due diligence on donors. This donation was actually started last year and just took a long time to be announced due to various bureaucratic complexities. It purely helps to fund the work of the WMF's developer team. [20:33:17] The NLG working group is comprised of WMF staff, plus volunteers from the Wikimedia movement, and volunteers from outside of the movement. Membership is open. The volunteers are not being paid for their contributions to Abstract Wikipedia by the WMF, nor by another organization. [20:42:12] I am sometimes disappointed about the current status of Wikifunctions. I expected that it will be easier to get involved in development and in contributing functions. This is why I am not sure if more money helps or if just another kind of development approach is needed. I am interested in block based programming and in the conversion of Spreadsheet functions into source code and [20:42:13] I still hope that it will be easier to contribute to Wikifunctions. As there occured some checks before accepting the funding it is ok for me as long as I will not find a big scandal of the Rockefeller Foundation that happend recently and is not yet clarified. [20:52:43] I understand. I also wish things would be moving faster. Donations like these allow us to move faster than otherwise.
